Science http://klcc.org en Anonymous Donor Gives $20 Million For New Hatfield Marine Science Center Facility http://klcc.org/post/anonymous-donor-gives-20-million-new-hatfield-marine-science-center-facility <p></p><p>Oregon State University received a large donation this week to launch a planned expansion of its marine studies facility and program.</p><p></p><p>OSU accepted a 20-million dollar anonymous donation this week to begin its fundraising for another Hatfield Marine Science Center facility in South Beach. &nbsp;</p><p>The 100-thousand square foot, two-story building is expected to be completed by 2017. The Marine Science Center currently houses 50 students. It has awarded $2.8 million to six 'learning hubs' around the state.</p><p></p><p>The Oregon Coast STEM Hub received the largest of the grants. Terry Crews is the project manager. New research suggests this liquid magma is very rare. That’s an important finding for researchers trying to predict when a volcano may erupt.</p><p>Magma may not be bubbling beneath the Northwest’s volcanoes as much as you think.</p><p>Researchers studying Mount Hood have found that magma is often too cold to move around so much. And cold, here, is a relative term.
