Music, Arts & Culture Host

Eric Alan is KLCC’s music, arts and culture host. The music performances he hosts on KLCC air during Q; his interviews and features air during The Takeaway, The World and other programs. He joined KLCC in 2010 as a host of the music program Fresh Tracks. He then became the host of the music, arts and culture program Living Large, which brought 800 performances and interviews to the airwaves in 2011-2013. Previously, he spent seventeen years at Jefferson Public Radio in Ashland, where he was music director and host of the daily music show Open Air; he also served there as editor and primary feature writer for The Jefferson Monthly magazine, Morning Edition host and producer of The Questing Feast (a food show). He is a nationally published author and photographer with three books to his credit, ranging from nature spirituality to major league baseball. He also works with National Geographic photographer Dewitt Jones, regularly contributing words and photographs to the project “Celebrate What’s Right with the World.” He is an accomplished lyricist as well, with credits ranging from international recording artists Gypsy Soul to the Oregon Cabaret Theatre.

Oystein Baadsvik, Live at KLCC

Norwegian-born Oystein Baadsvik is the only known tuba player in the world to carve out a professional solo career. He brought his astonishing musical skills and humor to the KLCC studios in a live performance hosted by Eric Alan, before performing a solo recital in Beall Hall on Sunday, October 27th, and attending the Ducks/UCLA football game--his first American football game ever.

Vietnam: An Inner View

During his three tours of duty in Vietnam as a Marine, Mark C. Waszkiewicz took thousands of photographs, recorded home movies and sent long letters home, as well as being a soldier. His experience is coalescing into a multi-media project called Vietnam: An Inner View, which includes a movie, a memoir, a photobook and an album of songs created and recorded with Lea Jones. Welcome to the Jungle is a live presentation drawn from Vietnam: An Inner View at Tsunami Books in Eugene on Thursday evening, October 24th.

Birds of Chicago, led by the husband and wife team of J.T. Nero and Allison Russell, toured Europe this spring with Midwestern guitarist and songwriter Peter Mulvey. By sheer coincidence, their Oregon tours overlapped, with Peter Mulvey performing at the Majestic Theatre in Corvallis, and Birds of Chicago at Cozmic in Eugene, both on Friday, October 26th. They reunited in the KLCC studios for a live performance, hosted by Eric Alan.

Ballet Fantastique opens their new season by bringing the legendary character of Zorro into the ballet world, with original choreography and live music by the world fusion band Incendio, and violinist Kim Angelis. Ballet Fantastique's executive director, co-producer and choreographer Hannah Bontrager joined Eric Alan in the KLCC studios, along with Incendio guitarist Jean-Pierre Durand. Zorro the Ballet runs Friday October 18th through Sunday October 20th at the Hult Center in Eugene.

New Realities at Reality Kitchen

Reality Kitchen creates community for intellectually and developmentally disabled young adults in Lane County, including job training, as well as creating other community-building events and programs. Reality Kitchen recently moved locations, opened a food cart, formed a partnership with Food for Lane County, and has begun to host their Acoustic Reality open mic sessions in their new location. Jim Evangelista, director of Reality Kitchen, and Acoustic Reality host Carl Falsgraf visited KLCC to speak with Eric Alan.

Korda and the Revolutionary Image is an exhibit of the works of the late Cuban photographer Alberto Korda, most famous for his iconic photograph of Che Guevara—one of the most reproduced images in human history. The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the UO campus in Eugene hosts the exhibit how through January 26th, with the first of two related talks taking place on Tuesday, October 15th. Eric Alan speaks with June Koehler, JSMA Assistant Curator.

Paul Bogard, author of The End of Night

Paul Bogard

Paul Bogard is the author of the book The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light.  He details the vital nature of pure darkness, and the increasing damage done by its absence in the modern world.
