90 x 30. Preventing Child Abuse by Nuturing Healthier Communities

Recorded on: April 3, 2015

Air Date: April 6, 2015

Speakers from the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect will describe the center’s plans for reducing violence against children. The goal of the 90by30 Initiative is a 90 percent reduction in child abuse and neglect in Lane County by 2030. The speakers will emphasize the need to engage a critical mass of neighbors to actively invest in healthy families and healthy communities.

Jeff Todahl, PhD, is an associate professor in counseling psychology whose current research focuses on violence prevention and community engagement as ways to reduce child abuse. Phyllis Barkhurst is director of the 90by30 initiative. Todahl and Barkhurst will summarize the research and data that provide a foundation for their work and shifts the focus away from after-the-fact interventions and risk-identified early childhood factors.

They will describe the project’s protective factor approach to primary prevention, which focuses on a support system that includes a role for every person, organization, and group in Lane County. They will also talk about the need and the methods for changing the cultural norms relating to child abuse prevention.

The initiative’s unique approach engages each community to organize its particular resources to play a crucial role in prevention. Regional leadership teams are planning initiatives in South Lane, North Lane, East Lane, West Lane, Eugene metro, the Springfield area, and McKenzie River. They are preparing to implement locally devised strategic plans that use proven and promising prevention strategies, most of which have never before been implemented in Lane County.
