Is there a song that changed the way you think about life? A song that changed your path? I've been thinking a lot about this the past few years and I've posed that question to 35 musicians. Their answers are in a book I just wrote: Your Song Changed My Life: From Jimmy Page to St. Vincent, Smokey Robinson to Hozier, Thirty-Five Beloved Artists on Their Journey and the Music That Inspired It. On this All Songs Considered +1 podcast, I'll read you my introductory chapter and tell you the song that set me on a path from failed guitar player and college drop-out to creating and hosting NPR's first online program, All Songs Considered and later Tiny Desk Concerts.

All Songs co-host Robin Hilton and I hope this inspires you to tell your tale. Tell us the story of your magical musical moment in the comments section. If you want to get fancy, record yourself telling your story using SoundCloud (or however you prefer), and put a link to your file in the comments section. We might use your story in a future episode of All Songs.

In 1988, a determined Bob Boilen started showing up on NPR's doorstep every day, looking for a way to contribute his skills in music and broadcasting to the network. His persistence paid off, and within a few weeks he was hired, on a temporary basis, to work for All Things Considered. Less than a year later, Boilen was directing the show and continued to do so for the next 18 years.
