Backpacks For Back To School Kicks Off

Amanda Butt

Wednesday, St. Vincent de Paul along with sponsoring partners met at Bi-Mart in Eugene to kick-off the “Backpacks for Back to School Drive.”

The “Backpacks for Back-to-School Drive” gives backpacks filled with basic school supplies to Lane County students for their first day of school. Ronnel Curry, executive director of the Springfield Education Foundation says new school supplies are vital to a child’s success.

Curry: “Our kids are asked to do a lot in school these days. A lot more than probably I did when I was a kid and if you don’t have the right supplies going into it, then you’re going to be behind from day one and that’s not good.”

George Reynolds brought his son, soon-to-be first grader Colton, to pick up some supplies.

Reynolds: “Well, my favorite is the backpack that has the headphone plug-in.”

Colton’s dad says buying supplies can get expensive, even for working parents.

The drive will continue through August. Those interested in donating can bring school supplies or financial contributions to any St. Vincent de Paul store. Or, click here for more donation sites.
