The best collegiate track and field athletes in the country are traveling to Eugene this week to compete in the NCAA Championships. The 4-day meet opens Wednesday at Hayward Field.
The University of Oregon Men’s track and field team got some big news last week. The national rankings were released and the Ducks were on top for the first time since April. Senior Trevor Dunbar is one of 21 U of O entries who hope to score points for the team. Dunbar will be running the 5000 and 10,000 meters.
Dunbar: “Two years ago I was here with Oregon and we weren’t really in the team hunt. This year is a totally different story. We have probably one of the schools with the most athletes in the championships and a very realistic chance to win a team title in both the men’s and women’s.”
The Oregon women have 20 entries in the Championships. They’re ranked 3rd nationally.
In addition to the athletes, thousands of family members, university officials and supporters will be in town. Travel Lane County says area hotels are close to capacity, but not completely booked out. As of Monday, tickets for the Championships are still available.
