Bike Lanes Part Of Willamette Paving Project

Rachael McDonald

A paving project on a portion of Eugene's Willamette Street includes new bike lanes and some other changes.

The project includes the stretch of street between 18th and 23rd avenues. It's the portion that passes by the shuttered Civic Stadium. Reed Dunbar is a transportation planner with the City of Eugene.

Dunbar: "People will see a buffer strip on the outside of the bike lane and what that does is it provides a little bit more space between the bicyclist and the driver and makes that space a little bit more predictable and a little bit more comfortable."

Dunbar says a lot of people had requested bike lanes on that stretch of Willamette. The section between 18th and 23rd is expected to be open to thru traffic by Friday afternoon.

A longer term planning process is underway for changes to the part of Willamette that goes from 23rd to 29th avenues in south Eugene.
