Central Oregon Locavore, a local food nonprofit in Bend, could be closing its doors after this summer if it doesn’t raise $25000 by the end of July. A recent move and a significant drop in business due to severe winter weather have caused a serious financial crisis for the organization. However, Locavore’s Megan French remains hopeful.
“It’s scary but we have such a strong local food community here and we’re slightly isolated being in Central Oregon so I think people are recognizing the importance of food security and food sovereignty and those sorts of things,” says French. “So yeah, I’m really just hoping that the community can help us through this one so we can continue on with the good fight.”
Locavore's largest program is its five-day-a-week indoor market. The market not only provides an accessible source of local and sustainable foods for Central Oregon residents, but also serves as a stepping stone into the industry for small producers in the region.
