Some of the favorites to win this year’s U.S. Open are saying nice things about the golf course after practice rounds at Chambers Bay near Tacoma, Washington.
The first-time U.S. Open host has previously taken some flak for its untraditional architecture, including major elevation changes and undulating greens.
Masters champion Jordan Spieth had plenty of compliments for the venue Monday.
“I really enjoy the layout,” he said. “I think it is going to be a fun challenge. It is a beautiful challenge as well. I think it might be slower rounds of golf given the size of the greens and the difficulty of the course. So at least we have some nice views as well.”
Speaking at a media Q&A, Spieth said if anyone should be favored this weekend, it should be him because of his caddie, Michael Greller. He lives in Gig Harbor, Washington, and is familiar with Chambers Bay because he caddied there for a few summers after the course opened in 2007.
The first round of the competition tees off on Thursday.
