City Club of Eugene: Life After Military Service

Our speakers will share how the military transformed their lives, and the challenges they faced returning to civilian life.

Dr. Michael Samano was born in Eugene, Oregon, and is the first person in his immediate family to earn a college diploma. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon, an M. A. from Humboldt State University, an M. A. from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. from Oregon State. He also is a veteran. In 1983 he served aboard the USS Moinester as a Legal Yeoman, where he also trained as a firefighter and earned shipboard and helicopter certifications. He was one three overseas deployments in 1985, 1986, and 1987.  This past July he celebrated the 20th wedding anniversary with his wife Rosa Chavez.

Mark Molina is Pastor of Living Waters Church in Springfield, Oregon. He is a U.S. Army Veteran. He served 11 years in the U.S. Army Infantry. He was honorably discharged in 1995. At Fort Sam Houston in 1991 he trained, and reintegrated U.S. Reservists from the 5th Army for combat in the First Persian Gulf War. His father, Pedro Molina Jr., retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. His father served 5 tours of combat in Vietnam and Korea. Pastor Molina’s wife Abigail is sole proprietor of the Molina Law Group in Springfield whose emphasis is Immigration Law.

Born and raised in Eugene, Anni started at KLCC in 2000 as a reporter and co-host of Northwest Passage. After graduating from the University of Oregon, Anni moved to New York City. She worked in education for several years before returning to her true love, journalism. Anni co-founded and co-hosted Dailysonic, a narrative-based news podcast. She interned at WNYC's On The Media, then becoming WNYC's assistant producer of Morning Edition.
