Coming This Fall, A New Look for Amazon Park

City of Eugene

South Eugene's Amazon Park Playground will close, and undergo a major renovation this summer.

Amazon hasn't been updated in over 25 years.

Emily Proudfoot is a landscape architect for the city. She says the wheelchair accessible ramping structure was cutting edge in the 80s, when it was initially constructed.

PROUDFOOT: "The playground structure that is there now, we have heard over and over how much they love that structure. What we're going to do with the renovation is to basically replace that structure with like. It'll be a little bit smaller footprint so we can make room for some other things."

Proudfoot says the old wading pool will go to make room for a large lawn. The city has applied for a grant to pay for a new, smooth $250,000 playground surface. If the grant doesn't come through, Amazon will keep the wood chips.

And don't worry, the fire engine and dinosaur stay.

PROUDFOOT: "We tested the dinosaur to make sure he's structurally sound. We hung a lot of weight on his neck and it didn't break, so we're good."
