Memorials are planned this weekend for some of the people who were killed in last week's shooting at Umpqua Community College. Meanwhile, the community is raising money to help all the victims and their families.

Umpqua Bank started an account with $25 thousand soon after the shootings. The website for donations is managed by Greater Douglas United Way in Roseburg. Bryan Trenkle is Executive Director. He says close to a half million dollars has been raised so far at www.uccstrong.com.
Trenkle: "100 percent of the funds deposited in that account will go to meet the needs of the families affected by last week's tragedy."
Many of the people who were wounded in the shooting have set up Go Fund Me campaigns to help with hospital bills. That includes Chris Mintz, the veteran who was shot 6 times while trying to shield others. His page has raised nearly $800 thousand dollars.

Rachael McDonald is KLCC’s host for All Things Considered on weekday afternoons. She also is the editor of the KLCC Extra, the daily digital newspaper. Rachael has a BA in English from the University of Oregon. She started out in public radio as a newsroom volunteer at KLCC in 2000.
