Councilors Consider Dusk To Dawn Camping For Homeless

Rachael McDonald

To help homeless people get through the winter, Eugene City Councilors are considering allowing camping on sanctioned property for overnight sleeping.  The Eugene City Council heard public comments Monday evening on the proposal. The pilot program would allow people to camp from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. People urged the council to extend those hours, including Wayne Martin.

Winter is here folks. We need to do something to help people.

Martin: "There's no additional threat for giving them a few more hours. It's dark. It's cold. And we all know it. So I think I'm just imploring you. Can you give us something for Christmas?"

Jocelyn: "My name is Tracy Jocelyn. I live at River Road and Northwest Expressway. Nightingale Health Sanctuary Rest Stop.  I support this pilot program 100%. If we're going to do it, let's do it with further open minds and compassion."

Riddle: "Donna Riddle, I do intake at Occupy Medical. Winter is here folks. We need to do something to help people. One of our patients is going through radiation on the streets. Every day, an hour of radiation therapy and living on the streets."
