The number of registered voters statewide has increased dramatically, that’s according to new data released today about the Oregon Motor Voter program.
Just over 15,000 Oregonians became newly registered voters in the first two months of the program's implementation. Before that, the number was closer to 2,000 per month.
Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins says some states create barriers to the democratic process.
ATKINS: "Oregon's been committed, ever since vote by mail, of trying to find ways that distribution of ballots is very universal and those who are eligible are able to vote and vote easily and Oregon Motor Voter is just another step along that way."
When an eligible voter visits the D.M.V., they receive a card and a pre-paid return envelope from the state Elections Office. There are 3 options on the card – opt out of registration, choose a political party or take no action and become automatically registered as a non-affiliated voter.
