In a uniquely Pacific Northwest approach to charity, every University of Oregon touchdown this season will be converted to trees in the ground.
That's 6 trees for every touchdown, inching close to 400 trees in advance of Friday's Civil War game. Erik Burke, Eugene Director for Friends of Trees, says the funding for the initiative comes from multinational car company, Daimler. It approached the Ducks, drawn to the success of the football team.
Burke: "They have a very strong and powerful brand that's connected with University of Oregon alumni around the state. So, they reached out to work with us, to sort of link friends of trees work with the Oregon Ducks. And so, we felt really lucky to be a part of that."
Daimler has similar partnerships with the Portland Timbers and the Trailblazers. No word yet on a location for the trees, but Burke says it will be somewhere there's a core group of U.O. alumni in Oregon.
And, if the Ducks make it to a bowl game – that's even more trees in the ground.
