Eugene Limits Fireworks

Wikimedia Commons

The Eugene City Council Monday approved restrictions on fireworks.

The council voted to limit the days when fireworks can be set off. They can be used only between June 23rd and July 6 and on December 31st and January 1st.

Another ordinance would make the use of illegal fireworks enforceable under the city's social host ordinance so that residents or home owners are held responsible when they're ignited.

The council has been hoping to crack down on illegal fireworks because of the noise, fire danger and injuries. Councilor Mike Clark:

"There are a lot of people who use illegal fireworks. It doesn’t take any kind of special investigation to see the number of things flying in the air and exploding and the number of really large things going bang on the fourth of July. Those are the illegal fireworks."

Eugene Police are stepping up enforcement around use of illegal fireworks. There's a tip line and email to report them. This Saturday, there's a turn-in event for illegal fireworks.

The turn-in event is Saturday, June 28th at the Emergency Services Training Center front lot at 2nd and Chambers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until storage is filled
