The City of Eugene wants to improve its downtown public spaces. They’re hoping people will get involved with several upcoming events.
Tomi Douglas Anderson is Cultural Services Director for the City of Eugene. She says downtown has been through some changes including new development. But more can be done to improve safety and function of downtown parks, squares and sidewalks.
Anderson: “And we want to attract folks downtown and people who work downtown need vibrant open spaces. And we need spaces that work for everybody. We have some awesome, dynamic, wonderful urban spaces in our city and we have some that aren’t as awesome.”
Anderson says they’re looking at how spaces and people interact.
Anderson: “There’s just tremendous capacity around economic development in downtowns. It’s just a really high-leverage investment. So, if we’re going to put time and money and really creating spaces that people want to live and work and play in, downtown is the first place that we need to start.”
The city is working with Project for Open Spaces, a non-profit from New York.
