Eugene Police Respond To 3 Incidents Of Kids Left In Hot Cars Wednesday

Eugene Police responded to three incidents of infants or young children left alone in vehicles Wednesday, when the high in Eugene was 100.

Eugene Police say when the outside air temperature is 95, the inside of a car can reach 125 degrees in just 20 minutes. This can be deadly for children or pets. On Wednesday morning, a baby was left inside a vehicle with the windows up in the parking lot of a grocery story on Coburg Road. The mother came outside, saying she forgot the baby was in the car. Later in the afternoon, employees at Wal-Mart broke the window of a vehicle after seeing an infant inside who appeared to be sweating and in distress. The mother was charged with child neglect. Less than an hour later, a woman left young children in a car at the First Place Family Shelter. The kids were reported to be very hot and screaming. They were treated by an employee. Police are investigating. Police say parking in the shade or cracking the windows open will not keep it cool enough in the summer heat. They urge parents to never leave children alone in cars, regardless of the weather.
