Eugene Police Urge Residents to Make Homes Secure While Out of Town

Wikipedia

As the winter vacation season begins, the Eugene Police Department is urging residents to protect their property while they're away.

Janecek: "Anything you can do to make it appear that somebody is still home. So, lights on timers, even sound on timers – talk radio is fabulous!"

Debbie Janecek is with the Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit. She urges residents heading out of town to put mail delivery on hold and don't leave your porch light on 24/7. This makes it too obvious no one is home.

Janecek says the Department offers a free home vacation check service, staffed by senior citizens in full police uniforms.

Janecek: "Our team will drive by your home, a couple of times each week that you're gone. They'll walk onto your property, they'll do a complete exterior check and make sure doors windows are still locked and closed. If someone's come through the neighborhood and dropped off flyers or circulations and left them on your porch, they'll pick them up and place them where you told them to do so."

And if you are home, Janecek says the old adage remains true – if you see something, say something.
