Eugene School Districts Finalize Hazardous Weather Makeup Days

Eugene 4J Schools

Eugene 4J and Bethel school districts will both be adding a number of school days to their calendars, including several days in June.

Each district had to cancel six days of school due to hazardous weather this winter. Since early January, they have been determining how to make up the unprecedented amount of lost time. 4J's Kerry Delf explains the considerations that went into finalizing their calendar:

"Initially with those three days lost in December, the district planned to add those days back at the end of the school year," says Delf. "But then we had to close for three more days and that discussion began about where to add back some time. Now the school board has approved a new calendar - the plan was developed with the teacher's association to find a plan that would work as best as possible for families, for staff and for instruction."

Eugene 4J is adding a total of five school days. Four of them will be in June, extending the school year until the 22nd. Bethel will be adding five days with two in June, ending their year on the 20th. High school graduation dates will not be moved in either district, though 4J grading and conference days have been rescheduled in order to balance trimester length.
