Eugene’s classical music station has a new host and is again broadcasting from its studios after 2 months of remote operations.
KWAX is a public radio station licensed by the University of Oregon. The studios were closed, mysteriously, just as nationally-known Music Director Peter Van de Graaff moved to town. His first day on the air was Thursday.
Van de Graaff: “A very good morning to you, Peter van de Graaff with you. Let’s take a quick look at the weather..”
The U of O is tight-lipped about why KWAX wasn’t live in-studio. Kyle Henley, a UO Vice President, says only that it’s a personnel matter and circumstances were beyond their control.
Henley: “We had to take some time to inventory equipment and also to make some fixes to our current location. We’ve done that and we’re back on the air.”
Henley says the plan is to move from their aging studios to a new facility in the next few months. KWAX has 45-thousand listeners and is the only classical music station in the South Willamette Valley.
Van de Graaff: “We’re going to listen to some Beethoven…”
