Eugene's First Bee Count a Success

Eugene’s first annual bee count was a success according to Beyond Toxics and the Walama Restoration Project. The event took place Saturday and attracted upwards of 30 people who counted a grand total of 982 bees. Though Krystal Abrams with Beyond Toxics says there were some concerns about the accuracy of the count.

“There may have been some double counting but mostly we put the plots far enough away from each other," says Abrams. "They had a good amount of space to stand still and just watch bees come and go without disrupting them or causing them to more into another plot.”

Abrams said the group consisted of students, scientists and bee enthusiasts. Together they identified a total of 16 different species of native bees over two acres in 30 minutes. Beyond Toxic’s next bee-related event is its upcoming Bee Jazzy fundraising concert, taking place Thursday, August 3rd.
