Farewell to Newspapers: What I Learned in Four Decades on the Beat

Guest Speaker: Bob Welch
Program Coordinator: Marlene Nesary

The City Club meeting that that features author and columnist Bob Welch falls on Oregon’s 155th birthday, February 14, the state whose beauty he frequently extolled. He will share other stories from his 37 years in the newspaper business, talk about the humor his readers craved and some of the inspiring people he featured, and and hint at his plans for the future.

The popular columnist, who left The Register-Guard last December, twice received the National Society of Newspaper Columnists’ highest honor. He first worked for the paper part-time while attending the University of Oregon. He returned to Eugene and capped his newspaper career by writing nearly 2,000 columns for the R-G.

Leaving the paper was not retirement for Welch. He is an adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Oregon, founded the Beachside Writers Workshop, and has written 17 books. His latest books are Cascade Summer: My Adventure on Oregon's Pacific Crest Trail and The Keyboard Kitten: An Oregon Children's Story.
