Festival of Eugene Taking Shape

A lot of people were disappointed last week when Kesey Enterprises announced the Eugene Celebration is taking a hiatus this year.  Now, an alternative event is in the works.

Krysta Albert runs the Eugene Health and Wellness Celebration which has been part of the Eugene Celebration over the years.  She says when the news came out community members contacted her about putting on a Festival of Eugene instead.

"I had 58 new friend requests on Facebook within 10 minutes of making the suggestion and, of those people, everyone is either of support, but primarily they want to help."

Albert says the Festival of Eugene is not trying to take the place of Eugene Celebration. She says it may be similar. A number of bands and other performers have stepped forward.

"People running around in balloon dresses. We have a contortionist. We have a theatrical group that does satirical skits on Star Trek scenes. We have a very diverse and eclectic group of artists."

Albert says the Festival of Eugene would take place along 5th street between Willamette and Pearl Streets on the second to last weekend in August. They're still waiting on a permit from the city.

Jaimie Baker of Baker Enterprises is also helping to organize the event.
