Forest Fire Smoke Hangs Over Lane County

Anni Katz

Heavy smoke from fires in the Cascades has led to “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” air quality ratings in Lane County over the last few days.

During air quality advisories, it is suggested people keep their windows and doors shut, as well as avoid outdoor activities.

Merlyn Hough with the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency, or LRAPA, says a change in wind direction as soon as tonight could clear up some of the haze. However, it is unlikely the smoke will go away entirely.

“The unfortunate thing for us is that there are so many fires spread over such a wide area that we can have smoke here in this end of the valley under a fairly wide range of wind condition," says Hough. "If it’s from the west, that’s currently the best scenario.”

Cooler temperatures this week should help control fires burning across the state.
