"Go Home" Campaign Against Malheur Occupation Raises $85,000

Rachael McDonald

As the occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge seems to be near an end, a fundraising campaign opposing it has been suspended. Leaders of the “Go Home” campaign say after a man died this week, they felt it was appropriate.

Oregonian Zach Klonoski and his brother co-founded the “Go Home” campaign soon after the occupation began. Their mother, Anne Aiken, is the federal judge who sentenced the Hammond brothers in the arson case that spurred the armed protest. But Klonoski says the campaign is not connected to his mom. It got a strong response from people who objected to the occupation… raising 85 thousand dollars.
Klonoski: “So we created this vehicle for people to be able to contribute to organizations that are antithetical to the goals and the views of the occupiers at Malheur.”
The “Go Home” campaign will benefit 4 organizations: Friends of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, The Burns-Paiute Tribe, The Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans for Responsible Solutions. Klonoski hopes the funds will help restore and heal the refuge and community.
