Heat, Rough Terrain, Make For Tough Firefighting Conditions

Oregon is in the thick of active fire season. Nearly 2 dozen blazes are burning around the state. This weekend’s hot, dry conditions make it especially challenging for fire crews.

More than 1-thousand personnel are working in the Willamette National Forest where there are several active wildfires. Sandra Lopez is a public information officer with the forest service.

“Our firefighters are working in very steep, rugged terrain. It is hot conditions.” Lopez says, “They carry a lot of fire gear with them. They’re quite amazing on the amount of work that they’re doing and the conditions that they’re doing and for the length of time that they’re doing it.”

Lopez advises people to check on road conditions as there are a number of closures due to fire activity in the area.

There are also some evacuation notices in effect—information is available athttps://inciweb.nwcg.gov/state/38/
