Junction City Diesel Spill Expected To Be Cleaned Up Saturday

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Portland and Western Railroad Company are continuing work to clean up about 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled in Junction City, Tuesday. A locomotive ran over a rail clamp which was left on the tracks by a maintenance crew, causing the accident near Holly and 12th Streets. DEQ Spokesman Dave Balyea says there doesn't seem to be any wildlife or plant life affected.

Belyea: "This is a very urban landscape, and more importantly, we haven't affected any waterways or storm drains or wells in the area, so it seems like it's a low risk spill, although we still need to do our best to clean up as thoroughly as possible."

Belyea says crews have been removing contaminated soil and cutting pavement sections around property owned by a local sawmill. Crews are expected to wrap up excavating Saturday.
