Lane County Offers Site For Eugene's Third 'Rest Stop'

Rachael McDonald

Lane County has offered a site for a temporary rest stop for people who are homeless and have mental and physical disabilities. The Eugene City Council must approve the site before it can be established.

Homeless advocates have been working for months to get a third rest stop in Eugene.  Michael Carrigan is with the Nightingale Collective and a founding board member of Opportunity Village Eugene.
Carrigan: “We have people who are ready to move on this site. We have a steering committee set up that’s ready to manage this site. So, the weather’s really cold. There’s a great need out there. So we are ready to make it happen.”
The county has offered a site along Martin Luther King Boulevard near its Behavioral Health offices. The rest stop would accommodate up to 30 people for the winter. County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky says the property was strategically chosen.
Mokrohisky: “We wanted it close enough to services, where it was not going to be disruptive, potentially, to residences. Where it was close to mental health and substance abuse treatment for those who might need those.”
Mokrohisky says Lane County is also offering space at its Serbu Youth Detention Center and at the Lane Events Center for the Egan Warming Center.
