Lumber Mill Fire Could Burn For A Week

A blaze at the Wood Recovery Lumber Mill near Junction City could burn for up to a week. The city’s fire chief, Brandon Nicol says that’s because of the amount of logs stacked on the property, the fire could burn for up to a week.

“Think about a gigantic campfire. Like, massive campfire with full-size trees, yeah. So it’s going to take a while for those to burn completely. Some of those bigger logs could go for weeks,” says Nicol.

Chief Nicol says to put the fire out completely would require a huge amount of water and resources. He says firefighters are attempting to bring the fire down to a size the property owners could manage on their own. This is because of the seasonal fire danger paired with the anticipated influx of people due to the eclipse; they will need to have their equipment and crew ready to respond to other incidents.

According to Chief Nicol the lumber mill is still accepting logs despite damages from the fire, suggesting they intend to continue operations in the future.
