Luper Cemetery To Unveil New Monument

Lupercemetery.com

Luper Cemetery north of Eugene will unveil a new monument over Memorial Day weekend. The stone was created to honor unmarked graves and markers that haven't survived.

The first burials at Luper Cemetery occurred in 1853. Over 160 people are buried at the site which is maintained by volunteers. President Peter Thurston says the monument is dedicated to 28 of the interred.

Thurston: "After five years of fixing things and taking care of the weeds and the cemetery. We determined there were a number of people that did not have a marker at the cemetery."

Thurston says people interested in history of the cemetery have researched and put together information on families interred at Luper. But some of the people buried there are unknown.

Thurston: "If people needed to be buried, not everyone was listed in an obituary or any other kind of formal process. So we have markers out there that are maybe indigents or others and we don't know everybody."

Luper Cemetery will dedicate the monument on Saturday at 11 a.m. The site will be open over the weekend and a special ceremony will be held on Memorial Day.
