Marijuana Listening Tour Continues In Benton County

Rachael McDonald

Marijuana cultivation and distribution zoning laws aren't perfect in Benton County. Officials are in the middle of a listening tour in hopes of being able to craft changes that benefit businesses and residents. Recently passed legislation puts non-profit medical grow sites at odds with selling to recreational dispensaries. Benton County Assistant Planner Linsey Godwin says in addition to zoning, residents have issues with terminology.

Godwin: "The term 'marijuana' actually has negative connotations, as so we should use the term 'cannabis.' And then recreational marijuana or commercial marijuana can be confusing, we need to find a way to communicate the sale of marijuana to adults, rather than saying medical marijuana."

Godwin says regulation from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission is being folded into the meetings. Some residents are unhappy with large grow sites next to their houses. Two meetings already have been held. There are three more in the next two weeks.
