Older, Wiser Gold-medalist Prepares For Olympic Trials

Kira Hoffelmeyer

Olympic Gold medalist Ashton Eaton competes this weekend in the Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field. At the 2012 trials, he broke a decathlon world record. He says his goal this time is to make the Olympic team.

Eaton lives and trains in Eugene. He says his best event is probably the long jump. He says he used to have favorite events in the decathlon. Now that he’s older, at 28, he likes them all.

“When you’re young you just want to get to the end. You just want the ice cream, you know. And then, I think when you get older, it’s like you know, that was a really nice trip to the ice cream store. It wasn’t about just getting ice cream at the end. I think as I get older it’s a little bit more like that, not just about getting the PRs in the end. Working through everything.”

Eaton is a favorite to get the gold in Rio. His wife Brianne Theison-Eaton will represent Canada in the heptathlon at the Olympics. She’s also predicted for the gold.
