Oregon Ducks Softball Team Wins First Game In NCAA Post Season Play

(Updated at 6:45pm 5-16)

The University of Oregon's softball team walked away with a convincing victory in the first game of the post season Friday. The Ducks defeated Utah Valley 12-1 at home in the NCAA Regional. The Ducks pitching staff struck out 11 of 18 batters they faced.

The Ducks entered the tournament ranked first in the nation. Before play began at the U of O's Howe Field, Head Coach Mike White said the ranking doesn't put any extra weight on the team's shoulders.

White: "I think there's pressure no matter whether you're one, three, five, seven, eight. It doesn't matter, there's a lot of pressure but hopefully we can handle that and we've talked about that all year, actually, that's been our focus. Just playing the game, doing what the game dictates - that we play great defense, we pitch well and we have great hitting."

The Ducks play again Saturday morning at 11:30.  They'll take on Wisconsin, a team they defeated last year in the post season.

If they lose, Oregon will play again at 5:30 this Saturday evening.  If they win, the Ducks will play in the Regional final tomorrow Sunday.
