Oregon Gets Federal Funding For Coastal Dredging Maintenance

www.dredgepoint.org

Oregon's Army Corps of Engineers will have adequate funding for dredging projects on the coast. Last week, Governor Kate Brown and Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio helped allocate more than $85 million needed to keep coastal waters navigable. Dredging is the removal and redistribution of underwater sediment to beaches or jetties. Michelle Helms is a spokeswoman for the Oregon Army Corps of Engineers.

Helms: "Several years back, we went through a difficult time financially, fiscally in this country. And this was a way that the State and the Corps, the federal government, could work together to come up with a solution to keep those dredged and maintained."

More than $3 million is being allocated to Yaquina Bay and Harbor. The Port of Siuslaw will receive about $920,000. Governor Brown issued a statement saying: "This work is critical for safety of the boating community and the survival of our coastal economy."
