Oregon Senator Floyd Prozanski Faces Recall Effort

Rachael McDonald

A woman from Cottage Grove has filed a petition to recall democratic state senator Floyd Prozanski of Eugene.  A small group of her supporters gathered at the Free Speech Plaza in Eugene Tuesday.

Patricia Michaelson-Duffy says she's disagreed with many of Senator Prozanski's actions over the years, but the recent passage of Senate Bill 941 is what spurred the recall effort. The bill expands background checks for private gun sales. Duffy says it is an undue burden on law-abiding gun-owners and doesn’t keep guns away from criminals.

Duffy: "He infringed on my second amendment rights with that bill because he's making it almost impossible for me to get a gun. There's so much nonsense with that bill."

Senator Prozanski says the bill doesn't take away citizens' constitutional rights.

Prozanski: "This is a bill that actually does in fact provide public safety by ensuring that felons as well as people with mental health issues are not having easy access to guns."

Duffy will have to gather more than 84 hundred signatures by September 4th to trigger a recall. There are separate efforts underway to recall Eugene area Representative Val Hoyle and two other Democratic Lawmakers from the Portland area.
