Oregon Waives Fees For State Parks On Black Friday

Oregon State Parks

The day after Thanksgiving isn't just for shopping.

Oregon State Parks is taking its cue from a major retailer and other states and waiving $5 day-use parking fees on Black Friday.

Chris Havel, spokesman for the state Parks and Recreation Department, says 26 of Oregon's 200 state parks regularly charge fees.

Havel: "The two in Lane County that people might want to check out the day after Thanksgiving would be Honeyman, I know most people go to Honeyman there near Florence on the weekends in the summer. But really in the fall, take a walk on the trails, take a walk alongside the lake, it's pretty nice. Heceta Head State Park, also on the coast there, where we've got that beautiful lighthouse, also charges a fee to park. But, that would be worth a visit. You might get some nice clouds, some nice wind action there."

It's likely to be cold but no rain is forecast for the day after Thanksgiving.  REI announced earlier this month that it will be closed on Black Friday to encourage people to get outside. Oregon is one of several states that have been inspired to waive fees.
