OSU Welcomes Name Suggestions for Three of Its Buildings

Oregon State University

Oregon State University has started accepting name suggestions for three buildings on its Corvallis campus. KLCC’s Deonna Anderson reports.

The process comes after a decision from OSU President Ed Ray to change the names of Benton Hall, Benton Annex and Avery Lodge. An historical review showed the namesakes of these buildings held racist or other exclusionary views.

Steve Clark is chair of the OSU Architectural Naming Committee and vice president for University Relations and Marketing.

“History is history. You don’t change it. And you take note of it, you’re informed by it,” he says. “If you determine that the history of a building or some policy or practice isn’t in keeping with the values or the mission of in this case Oregon State University, you consider whether or not change is in order and we decided that that was the case in three of the buildings.”

Clark says this is a chance to recognize the legacy of Oregon State and the Willamette Valley, as well as acknowledge where the university is heading.

OSU welcomes community members to submit name options both online and at a public meeting on April 2nd. President Ray will announce the new names at the end of April.
