OPB News

Portland runner Emily Infeld is going to the Olympics in Rio. She finished second in the women’s 10-thousand meter race at Hayward field in Eugene Saturday.

Infeld couldn’t stop smiling after finishing just behind Molly Huddle of Saucony in the 10K. She describes a conversation with her coach Jerry Schumacher of the Bowerman Track Club:
“We were kind of having a chat before the race and he’s like, you’ve dreamed of this since you were a little girl and I was like, I know. I don’t even want to think about that now. I just want to think of this as any other race. But, it’s crazy, because I feel like I just got in race mode of doing that and then crossed the finish line and it’s like, whoa, it really happened. Doing it. We’re all going to Rio!”
Infeld got the bronze medal for the 10k at the World Championships in Beijing last year. This is her first time to compete in the Olympics. She’s joining fellow Portlander, gold-medalist Galen Rupp, who came in 1st Friday in the men’s 10 thousand. University of Oregon graduate Jordan Hasay didn’t make the women’s team. She came in 9th in the 10k. [I’m Rachael McDonald at Hayward Field in Eugene.]
