Portland Timbers Win First MLS Championship

soccer.nbcsports.com

The Portland Timbers soccer club has won their first Major League Title, defeating the "Columbus Crew" 2-1 Sunday. The victory was a big win for the Northwest.

Portland came out aggressive in Columbus, Ohio, with Diego Valeri scoring at the 27-second mark for the fastest goal in MLS Cup history. The second point came quickly during the seventh minute when Crew teammates stopped playing when the ball rolled several feet over the right boundary. Instead of a stoppage for a throw-in, Portland kept going with Rodney Wallace eventually scoring the winning goal on a header.

Wallace: "This is a goal that this whole club has had. This is a vision that I've had since I came here. The plan was to come here and win trophies and I was able to help the team out, and we are all champions, you know? It's everybody, and it's the whole city. We have to enjoy this moment and cherish it because we've all worked so hard for it."

Wallace has been with the Timbers for 5 years. After the victory, fans took to the streets to celebrate in downtown Portland, causing some mild traffic disruptions. It is the first MLS win for a soccer club in the Pacific Northwest.
