As the Idaho Legislature lurches to a conclusion of its 2016 session, Idaho lawmakers and some school groups are declaring schools a winner.
“We have a lot to be thankful for. It was a great year for education,” state Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra said. “So we’re looking forward to the boots on the ground work that is coming.”
State spending on public schools is slated to rise 7.4 percent in the coming year. Higher education in Idaho also got a healthy funding boost from the legislature.
But there is still high drama in Boise in regard to another priority. The state Senate called it quits for the year Thursday night after sending a take-it-or-leave-it offer to the House on a key session issue. The Republican-controlled House is expected to vote Friday whether to expand access to health insurance for the working poor.
