The Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians has acquired a 125 acre wetland area on the central coast between Florence and Reedsport. They plan to restore salmon habitat on the property.
Stan Van De Wetering is Biological Programs Director with the Siletz Tribe.
Van de Wetering: “The property is predominantly all wetland habitat. It’s located at the lower end of Fivemile Creek where Fivemile Creek spills into Takenitch Lake.”
Van de Wetering says the 125 acre plot is critical nursery habitat for native coast Coho salmon-- which is culturally significant to the Siletz tribe. The tribe plans to restore the wetlands by removing dikes and possibly adding more native plants and trees. The land acquisition was done with help from the McKenzie River Trust with funding from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.
