Southeastern Oregonians Form Preservation Group In Ontario

Chris Hansen

Oregon's Southeastern desert canyon country has a new group of volunteers dedicated to preservation projects and organizing special events. "Friends of Owyhee" is part of an informal network of individuals who enjoy the area near Burns and Ontario. Tim Davis is the founder of the group. He says it's becoming harder to find places to escape to.

Davis: "It's just trying to get people to open their eyes and really see what's there. There are studies out there saying that within the next 20-25 years, it's only going to be one of three spots in the continental United States that they'll be able to see the Milky Way - and you know, I think that's important for future generations to see."

Davis says the area is home to several rare plants and is also rich in history. As Oregon's drought continues, rafting in the canyon lands is unlikely this year, but Davis says there are plenty of hiking trails to explore.
