2016 was a busy year for the City of Springfield. Thursday night in her 7th State of the City address, Mayor Christine Lundberg talked about housing, economic growth, and infrastructure improvements. She also recognized local artists and businesses for their contributions to the City. KLCC’s Kyra Buckley was there.

Speaking to a crowd of about 50 people at the Wildish Theater in Downtown Springfield, Mayor Lundberg praised the city for attracting business, investing in education, and for creating what she calls a flourishing downtown. She also mentioned specific projects like cross laminated timber and the Springfield library providing cards to all public school students thanks to grant funds.

But Lundberg said more work needs to be done, especially when it comes to housing and homelessness.

Lundberg: “We must address Springfield’s housing needs. There’s only a two-month supply of homes for sale. Renters don’t have it any easier and our rental vacancy rates are extremely low.”

Mayor Lundberg named the entire Springfield Police Department as employee of the year at her 2017 State of the City address.

Lundberg says the city will create a new housing strategy in 2017.

Mayor Lundberg presented awards to artist Dottie Chase, the owners Urban Lumber Seth and Christina San Filippo, and she named the entire Springfield Police Department as Employee of the year.
