Springfield Police are warning local residents to be aware of a new telephone scam targeting customers of the Eugene Water & Electric Board and the Springfield Utility Board.

In the scam, a man calls and says he is a utility worker and tells the customer their electricity will be disconnected because of unpaid bills. The customers are given a phone number to call within 45 minutes to set up a payment or their power will be shut off.

Springfield Police Lieutenant Scott McKee says this is a new twist on a phone scam intended to create urgency.

Local utility customers who receive questionable billing calls are asked to call Springfield Police. Police also recommended that EWB and SUB customers verify any phone numbers of people contacting them about bills.
