Springfield Will Unveil New Memorial On Veteran's Day

On Veteran’s Day, Friday, the City of Springfield will unveil a new Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial at Willamalane Park.

Springfield has created a new plaza in the park for the memorial.
Community Relations Manager Niel Laudati says it will replace the small plaque that was put here in the 1970s when the war was still a fresh wound for the country.
“It was very difficult at the time for them to do anything about the Vietnam War. So it wasn’t, I don’t think, complete. And so the Vietnam veterans that we worked with, instead of a small plaque, it’s actually a 7-foot wall, very reminiscent of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C.”
The black granite slab has the image of a soldier carved on the front. On the back, names of local veterans are etched. The memorial will be unveiled with a ceremony Friday. This plaza is where the city plans to place a Women Veteran’s Memorial. That project is in planning stages and expected to be complete by the end of next summer.
The event begins at 11:30 Friday morning at Willamalane Park at the corner of Mohawk and I Street in Springfield.
