Three women who were wounded in the shooting Thursday at Umpqua Community College were transported via helicopter to Peace Health Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield.
Trauma surgeon Dr. Scott Russi says all three women are stable. Two are considered critical. Russi is optimistic about their recovery. He has worked as a combat surgeon in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Russi: "In these mass casualty situations. It bothers me when I get home. I mean, I've gone home and cried. I don't understand it. But, hopefully, we're going to be there for these patients. It's going to happen again. It happened here 17 years ago. It happens in the U.S."
Russi is referring to the shooting at Thurston High School that left 2 students dead and more than 2 dozen wounded. He was not at Peacehealth at that time.
The hospital has not released the names of the wounded.
