Teen Sentenced For Starting Eagle Creek Fire

inciweb

The 15 year old boy charged with lobbing a firecracker into a canyon and igniting the Eagle Creek Fire last summer plead guilty in juvenile court Friday.

The court sentenced the teenager to five years probation and nearly 2,000 hours of community service facilitated by the U.S. Forest Service.

The teen plead guilty to 12 misdemeanor counts that include reckless burning and criminal mischief for starting a fire in the columbia river gorge last September.

The fire spanned nearly 49 thousand acres and jumped the Columbia River.

Near the end of his hearing, the boy read a statement before a courtroom filled with members of the media and victims of the fire.

He said he will have to live with his bad decision for the rest of his life, and that he now realizes how much work it takes to maintain the National Forest.
