Federal agents searched Washington State Auditor Troy Kelley’s home in March. Now the results of that search have been unsealed.

The search warrant return shows that agents seized file boxes, computers, thumb drives and tax documents from Troy Kelley’s Tacoma home. The court file also shows federal agents found documents related to Kelley’s prior business that seem to refute his claim in 2010 that all relevant records had been destroyed in a fire.

Investigators also sought a second search warrant in March to do a deeper search of Kelley’s computers and thumb drives. What they were looking for then was evidence that he may have created documents to support his story that he continued to operate a real estate services business out of his home.

The agents said some of the documents they found during their search of his home seemed to support Kelley’s story. But they also said a closer examination of those documents raised questions about purpose and timing of when those documents were created.

Kelley has pleaded not guilty to a 10-count federal indictment that includes charges of tax evasion. He is scheduled to take an indefinite leave of absence as state auditor beginning Monday.
