The 19 year-old who suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the shooting at Umpqua Community College last week is breathing on her own. Doctors spoke with reporters Thursday at PeaceHealth Medical Center in Springfield.
Julie Woodworth was transported by helicopter from Mercy Medical in Roseburg to Peacehealth a couple hours after the shooting. Neuro-Trauma Liaison Dr. Niel Roundy says on Wednesday Woodworth opened her eyes and they were able to remove her breathing tube.
Neil Roundy: "At this point we're very, very happy to say that she is extubated. She is doing fairly well. Again, she is not yet talking and not able to interact with us on a following commands basis but we're very happy about the progress that she's made thus far."
Roundy says it's unknown whether Woodworth's speech or motor function will be affected. She was also shot in each of her 4 extremities and is still in critical condition. Roundy says youth is on her side in terms of recovery. One more woman, who was shot at U.C.C. last Thursday is still at Peacehealth. She's in fair condition.
